5 minutes with… Sienna Blair founder Anna

We caught up for a quick chat with Anna, the founder and director of boutique New Zealand kids and womenswear brand, Sienna Blair. She shares with us what’s coming up in 2022 for Sienna Blair, her wardrobe staples and advice for those looking to start their own small business.

1.    Tell us a little bit about yourself and your brand, Sienna Blair

I grew up in Christchurch and moved to Dunedin 8 years ago for my previous job. We were only meant to stay a few years but ended up falling in love with the place.

After I had Sienna I was looking for something to occupy my days. I have always been really interested in fashion and design so naturally I started sketching pieces I wanted made for her. The business started out with two designs operating out of our spare room and has slowly grown to where it is today. I have recently resigned from my other job and am focusing everything on the business.

2.    How have you adapted business for the Sienna Blair brand during the latest Covid-19 restrictions?

Not much has changed for us with the latest Covid-19 restrictions as we are an online store only. We have such incredibly supportive and loyal customers which has kept us going. It’s such a hard time for small businesses!

3.    Your go-to wardrobe staple for yourself and your minis and why?

Sienna is at the age where she likes to pick her own pieces to wear which at the moment is twirly skirts and dresses. If I were to pick her outfit it would be a pair of bike shorts and an oversized tee. For me comfort is a huge priority so I tend to live in knit shorts and a tee or shirt.

4.    Your favourite piece from the current collection?

Definitely the black and ecru shorts for me. They are on high rotation in my wardrobe. But otherwise, I would have to say the checkerboard pieces.

5.    Your must read/listen/watch book/podcast/series recommendation?

I have just finished Clickbait on Netflix and thoroughly enjoyed it! I also love the beyond the bump podcast too which is light hearted and very relatable.

 6.    What advice would you give to someone wanting to start their own fashion label?

I would say do your market research before launching i.e are you offering something that other brands don’t?

Surround yourself with likeminded, creative people and if possible find yourself a mentor. I have been lucky enough to have a handful of close friends to help me with advice and design.

Lastly I would say back yourself, go with your gut and If you’re determined and work hard enough you will succeed.

7.    What's next on the horizon for Sienna Blair?

We are currently putting together a collection to show at NZFW in February which is exciting. This year I am focusing a lot on working with organic, natural fibres and dyes as well as custom prints and patterns unique to us.
