Tips for switching off over the break
With hybrid and flexible working being the new normal for many of us, we know how difficult it can be to really switch off from work mode and take that much needed break. We share a few of our top tips to ensure a (relatively) disruption free and relaxing Christmas and summer break…
Use your out of office
If you can, put your out of office on and explain that you won’t have access to email during your break. Be sure to include contact details for skeleton staff during that period to give you peace of mind that someone is available in case of emergency.
We recommend putting your out of office on 1-2 days before you actually finish up, giving you some additional time to clear your to-do list.
Take your emails off your phone
We know this is a big ask but we assure you, after a couple of days you’ll have broken the habit of unnecessarily checking your emails every chance you get. Plus, you won’t be tempted to deal with work tasks while you’re on leave and your mental health will be all the better for it.
Put a comprehensive plan in place for staff who are working
If you’re responsible for a team and they’re not taking time off, work with them on a comprehensive plan to troubleshoot any issues that arise including who they can go to in the first and second instance. This way, you’ll reduce communication to only what’s truly necessary.
Set yourself boundaries you can adhere to
If you simply can’t be off the clock altogether, we recommend implementing the above along with some realistic boundaries for working through the break. Allocating a set time each day (or on certain days) for work, including this in your out of office and communicating it to your team can help reduce the time you spend on work during your time off.
Plan your break
Finally, getting out of the house - whether it’s to the beach with a book or to catch up with friends and family, means you’ll be able to switch off from work more easily and do the relaxing you so deserve!
