5 ways to upskill & maintain your professional knowledge during lockdown

After 3 weeks in lockdown, you’ve finished all the Netflix and Lightbox series, reorganised your wardrobe, deep cleaned the house, tidied the garden and baked every recipe in the cookbook. So, what next?!

Now is the perfect time to up-skill in your career and keep your professional knowledge up to date. My late father always said “give a job to a busy person, they will get it done” and that “activity generates more activity”. These words ring true at the moment. The more we keep our brains busy and engaged with work and our professions, the easier it will be to hit the ground running when we return to the office and our normal workload. Personally, I enrolled in a PR and media writing course to help fill in my days, as while we are still working at Frame, we are working reduced hours. Studying fills in the extra time, and not only makes the days speed by but stretches my brain and teaches me new skills.

Here are our favourite ideas to keep learning and keep engaged with your career during this challenging time:

  1. Enrol in a refresher course. There are plenty of affordable courses online! Head to Udemy or Teachable and look up your area of expertise.

  2. Subscribe to industry emails and newsletters. This is a great way to stay engaged with your industry and the latest updates!

  3. Watch webinars and podcasts. I listen to podcasts on my daily walk, and watch retail and fashion industry webinars whenever I see them pop up. There are so many talented people sharing their views and experiences, it’s an excellent (and free) resource.

  4. Join social media groups from your industry. Especially Linkedin and Facebook groups. Find out which ones are relevant to you and sign up.

  5. Get a mentor! Business mentors are not just for the self-employed. You can have a career mentor, someone who is an expert in your field or even a senior family member that you look up to. Reach out to them and have regular chats about what the market is doing.

I hope these ideas have helped or inspired you. Good luck and stay safe and healthy!
